spot in a grief support group because her late husband9s illness was so rare that it
wasn9t supported by any advocacy group.
It was a relevant story, which I helped bring to life by finding all the small details
and nuances in both the plot and the landscape of meaning that could support
this angle.
But I didn9t present readers with alternative stories or cracks. In my notebook, I
marked the stories that also existed, where the family had been met with warmth
and help from doctors and nurses. But I didn9t devote column space to them, nor
did I spend much time on the moments when life had offered anything other than
illness and death.
