know Tom, Michael and I resisted giving narrative therapy a name for as long as
we could. We were concerned that once it had a name that it would become a
thing. And that once it became a thing, then there would be all sorts of
enticements such as regulating its practice, claiming that there is some kind of
right or wrong way to do narrative therapy, and creating shortcuts or guidelines
to practice that somehow circumvent the philosophies and spirits that inform
them.=
As someone who learned narrative therapy long before the maps of narrative
practice were outlined, I told David about my own struggles fitting these
newfound maps into my work and how I found myself, all of a sudden, losing my
way and feeling more and more flat in my work. David responded once again with
something that caught me by great surprise.
