Katie: So you would think that they should read your story?
Shadow: I guess.
Katie: And then you9d autograph it.
Shadow: And sell it for 50 bucks. [We laughed.]
Katie: If they were to read your paper, what would you want them to see or get
out of it?
Shadow: I don9t know.
Katie: Do you think it would have any effect on them?
Shadow: Not really. Who says they would listen to an 11-year-old. They wouldn9t
listen. I know kids.
[A fair point. I tried another angle.]
Katie: Last time we met, you and your parents were sharing a little bit about what
your school situation was like at the time. They were saying how it was
almost like people were at this point where if even one thing happened,
you9d get in trouble. Do you remember us talking about that last time?
Shadow: Yeah.
Katie: If they were to read it and see that there might be a way out or an end to
what9s going on in that moment, what do you think that would be like for
them?
[Here, Shadow took my question to be about if teachers read this article, which
turned out to be a much more interesting conversational route.]
Shadow: They9d believe in their students.
Katie: It would help teachers believe in their students?
Shadow: Yeah. They would.
Katie: Do you think your teachers saw that side of you much?
