To actively participate in the construction of handmade language, we can ask who
the language belongs to, and whether our words are part of a problem story or
serving the influences of power. In ready-made language, words masquerade as
single-storied prototypes that erase other perspectives, whereas handmade
language is unique, carrying abstract meanings from multiple frames.
An example can be seen in my client Nell's use of the word "Meta" as a
mantra for inspiration. I asked Nell to teach me about the word:
Nell: I got the word from a meditation retreat, but I have a different experience
of what the word means. It is all-encompassing love & I must love myself in
a way that is globalized. We are all worthy. Like reaching out for the
existing love in the universe and bringing it into myself.
Lucy: Symbolically?
Nell: Effectively.
Lucy: Because you can put it into action?
Nell: That9s a good question. For me, I9ve decided that self-love is a good answer
to my issues and a good way to find self-love is accessing the energy of the
universe and bringing it to 8self,9 instead of 8I9m great.9
